Saturday Scramble at Birmingham, KBHM, February 20, 2010

Downtown Birmingham, Alabama

Birimgham "Pittsburgh of the South" Alabama, KBHM, is a rather small airport, when you compare it to Charlotte or LAX, but it gets the job done. Largest in Alabama, BHM serves over 3 million passengers each year.

Originally Roberts Field, it was a small airport between Atlanta and New Orleans. American Airways (now AA) bypassed Birmingham in 1929 because their Ford Tri-Motor couldn't land here. That set off the development of a new airport which became Birmingham Minicipal Airport, then Birmingham International Airport, and finally Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in 2008.

If you want to fly a US Airways route, you most likely start in Charlotte. There are seven (7) flights in the table for CLT-BHM and a single flight for PHL-BHM. United has flights from Chicago and Denver, Continental has you flying out of Houston.
